Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Lerner Business Computing Site Q&A's
Q: Where is there a color printer? How much does it cost?
A: If you have created and/or saved your document or file on CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, floppy, or portable USB drive, you can use Adobe Acrobat Pro in one of the computers in the first row of the Smith Hall site to change the document to a .PDF. Resave the document and then ask at the Microforms & Copy Services desk for help in printing a color document from the color scanner/copier (staff will need to disable the security before you can print). The print costs $1.00/page. There are color printers located in the Smith Hall and Recitation Hall computing sites.

Visit the computing hall websites for current pricing at the following links:

Q: Why is the university charging for printing?
A: In an attempt to reduce the paper waste at computing sites, IT/User Services implemented the PrintLess Program to inform the University Community about paper conservation. Part of this program was the implementation of a pay-to-print system to help offset the costs of consumables in the computing sites. Students are given a "free allocation" of 100 single-sided prints per six-month period. Once that allocation is exhausted, then students are required to pay for additional prints. Faculty and Staff are not given a free allocation. For additional information, see the PrintLess program's web site.

Q: How much does it cost to print?
A: Currently, IT/User Services has the cost set at 5¢ per page for single-sided (simplex) prints and 4¢ per side for double-sided (duplex) prints.

Q: How do students pay for prints?
A: Payment for prints at the Lerner Business Computing site can be made either with a UD#1/FLEX card. Students are given 100 free single-sided prints every six months, so students should be sure to use the UD#1/FLEX card payment method first. Money can be added to a FLEX card using one of the value transfer stations located throughout campus.

Q: What software is available in the lab?
A: The Lerner Business Computing Site has a wide variety of software packages installed. Among the most popular are the following:
  • Microsoft Office XP Professional
  • Internet Explorer & Mozilla
  • Adobe Acrobat
  • SPSS and EViews
For a complete list of available software, see the Lerner Business Computing site's software list.

Q: Can I make a reservation for a computer?
A: No, the Lerner Business Computing site does not take individual reservations for computers. However, faculty and staff may reserve rooms 022, 026, and 028 for hands-on computer-related instruction (but not as a regular meeting place for a class). To make a lab reservation, contact the Lab Coordinator by calling the office at 831-6483. For complete details on making lab reservations, including the reservation request procedures, please see our Reservation Guidelines and Policies page.

Q: What types of media can be used in the lab?
A: The computers in the Lerner Business Computing Site have many options available for saving your documents and files. Users are encouraged to purchase USB flash drives (small memory-based storage devices) that can hold large amounts of data in a small space. Flash drives can be used on all the computers in the our site. Each computer has a floppy, CD-ReWriteable, DVD, and 250MB Zip drives.

Q: Can students use their own paper/transparencies/envelopes in the printers?
A: No, "This is a university-wide policy."
