Changes for a more
flexible finance major - Effective Fall 2006
In Spring 2005, the University approved an update of
the Finance Major that will add flexibilities for
students. This update is now the official
program for freshman entering in Fall 2006.
Among the key changes are the
following.
1. FINC 311 will have only ACCT
207 (not ACCT 208) as a prerequisite. Therefore, it
would be available to second-semester sophomores who
take ACCT 207 in fall of their sophomore year. This
is intended to allow students to take several
finance courses during their junior year, thereby
preparing them for a really meaty and interesting
internship during their junior summer. This means
that students should begin developing course plans
and contacts to help with such an internship at a
very early stage of their UD career.
2. FINC 311, FIN312, and FINC 407
will be required for all finance majors, as is
currently the case (though FINC 407 is now
renumbered to FINC 314). Students would be required
to take three additional finance courses as finance
electives for the major. Only the first three
courses will be specifically required. This is
intended to allow students to choose courses that
are most appropriate for their intended job path.
3. The updated
finance major includes more free electives than the
current program, to allow for more study of subjects
of special interest, and includes room for the
Lerner College's freshman experience, which is under
development.
If you are early in your UD
Finance education, or if you are a prospective
student, we suggest that you think seriously about
how to structure your education in the context of
this flexible program. You should obtain
advice from Mr.
Detwiler, the Finance Department's Advisor, on
all important choices.
