Many
students find that a minor in Economics nicely complements their major;
our minors include students in a very wide variety of majors across many
of the colleges at the University. A minor in Economics requires 18
credits in economics, divided between nine credits of required courses
in economic theory and nine credits of economics free electives. Many
students find that after having taken ECON 151 and ECON 152, a minor can
be completed relatively easily and can be fit into the schedules of most
majors.
Requirements
-
18
credits in economics. Only courses with a grade of C- or better
count toward the 18 credits.
-
Required
courses: ECON 151 and 152 plus at least one intermediate-level
theory course (ECON 251, 300, 301, or 303).
-
Economics free electives may be taken from any economics courses at
the 300 level or higher
-
If a
grade below a C- is received in ECON 151 or 152, that course must be
repeated. If a grade below a C- is received in any other economics
course, it does not have to be repeated, but can be used as a
University free elective
and another economics course can be taken in its place to meet the
minimum 18 credits with a C- or better. If a course is repeated, all
grades appear on the transcript and count when calculating the grade
point average, but credits may be earned only once.
-
Some
courses are offered at different levels of difficulty but are
similar in terms of course content. For such courses only one (not
both) can be counted towards fulfilling the 9 credits of economics
free electives. These include ECON 332 and ECON 433; ECON 344 and
ECON 444; and ECON 381 and ECON 483. Students may take both courses
only in order of difficulty (i.e., ECON 332, then ECON 433) and only
with advanced approval from the Economics Department Chair.
Becoming An Economics Minor
You may
apply to become an economics minor after you have completed ECON151 and
ECON152. The principal criterion for
acceptance is the potential for academic success in economics.
Application for the minor must be submitted online using your UDSIS
account.
