RESUME WRITING ASSISTANCE

Professor Latham will be happy to look at your resume and give you comments. He has found that it is most productive if you do the following things before you ask him to look at it:

1. Write down a brief “career goals statement’: What would you like to do for the next few years and what are your long-range plans. Your resume should be written with your goals in mind. When you finally send Professor Latham your resume to review, you must include your career goals statement.

2. Look at some of the other résumé’s online on the Department of Economics’ placement web site.

3. Write out a draft of a resume. Remember that your goal is not to summarize your life, it is to clearly inform the reader of the relevant aspects of your education, training and experience. Avoid abbreviations, acronyms and long titles for programs or positions. You have some license in modifying such things as long as you do not misrepresent yourself.

4. Ask a native-English-speaking fellow student (whether you are a native speaker or not, DO THIS) to read your resume. If he/she does not understand anything, you need to make changes.

5. Use the resume writing services of the Career Services Center. You must register (for free) with CSC to do this.

When you have done these 5 things, then

6. Send Professor Latham a draft of your resume and your career goals statement as attachments to the same e-mail.

7. If you want to make an appointment with Professor Latham, please include your class and work schedule so that he can choose a time that is good for both of you.

8. You may also request that your resume be posted on the Department's Placement Job Candidate page.
