  • Searching for an academic teaching position requires some special considerations. Please see the Academic Jobs Search Advice page

  • Using the Web to Advance your Career by John Casson

  • US Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, article on Economists

  • The NABE continually receives new position listings. You can view these at the University's Career Services Center.

  •  The NABE also has salary surveys on its website.
  • Internet job search sites include AnalyticRecruiting.com, Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, and Jobs.net, www.econcareers.com/ among others. If you have any others that you have found to be especially useful, please share that information through the discussion page on this site.

  • The American Economics Association maintains a site with academic and nonacademic jobs called Job Openings for Economists (JOE) which also has helpful articles about the market for economists. http://www.aeaweb.org/joe/

  • Many academic jobs (both administrative and teaching) can be found on the Golden Key Honor Society's site: http://socialsciences.academickeys.com/index.php

  • The American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) has a web site with job lisitngs: http://www.aacsb.edu/jobs2/

  • Advice for job seekers from a graduate who has been there and now hires. "I encourage development of writing and public speaking skills among your graduates. For me and many in positions like mine, good technical and theoretical skills alone aren’t enough. Good candidates also must speak confidently in front of large and small groups and write clearly for a non-economist audience, often under deadline pressure.   They must be comfortable in an interview or at a business meal. Those “social” skills and a sound foundation in economics are more difficult to find than they should be. Students who can deliver the entire package will have a real advantage in the market."

  • Advice from an experienced Ph.D. job seeker: "I have benefited much from some more general career search tips and advice... the role of networking, informational interviews, how to get an internship etc.  One web site I like is http://www.ironstring.com/sellout/   "

MANY FIRMS NOW GIVE BRIEFS TESTS OF VARIOUS KINDS TO POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is now using an assessment tool, consisting of 20 logic reasoning questions and 20 quantitative reasoning questions, to recruit entry-level economists. A preparation guide for this assessment is available on the BEA site http://www.bea.doc.gov/bea/beajobs.htm

  • The following site has a number of web sites and guides on it: http://www.swcollege.com/econ/careers.html

  • The following is another economics job site.
